If the flowers are coming from a true flower shop and are previously arranged you may not notice this as there are a few tricks we designers use to minimize this from happening. One way is that you can place them further into the arrangement so that when they grow they’ll be in a better position. How do you know where that place is? Part of it is practice but to start you off aim for about 1 inch further in the arrangement than you think it should be. Another tip is to put a tiny slice at the top of the stem right below the petals. If you go with this route make sure you put the tulip where you want it then because this will greatly minimize any growth and often times all of it.
Another funny consideration with tulips is that they are phototropic. That is just a fancy way of saying that they like light so they will bend and grow toward the light. To keep them from bending in one direction too much you just have to keep turning your flowers so all sides get an even amount of sun.
Other important things to remember about tulips is that they have soft stems which means that they are more fragile. When selecting a vase make sure that it is a good size. If the vase is short you need to cut the flowers shorter. The general school of thumb that most people are taught is that the flowers should be 1.5 times the height of the container. This is true to a degree but there are plenty of exceptions. With tulips you just want to make sure that they are not too tall to the point where they are going to not have enough support by the container if they can’t stand upright themselves. Another option is to cut them very short so that they create a more low lush look by being down close to the top of the container. Cleanliness is also an important factor. Make sure that the container is thoroughly washed. This will help to minimize the passing of any bacteria that will short the length of the tulips. Choosing tightly closed buds is also key when making sure you get the longest possible life out of your tulips. Checking the water daily is also of the utmost importance as tulips drink more water than most cut flowers. It is also important to change the water every few days.
